How to play

Who does what

A passenger holds the phone, reads the prompts out loud, types the answers and keeps score. The driver only talks. No game here asks the driver to look at anything.

How many of you there are

Tell it on the home page or the games list. It is not a preference; it changes what is on the menu.

With two of you, the one holding the phone is on your side. You both work the same problem and the score to beat is shared. That is the ten games the site started with, and they stay open however many of you there are.

With three or more, the one holding the phone stops playing and starts refereeing, and six further games open up that are played between everybody else. They work for the same reason the rest of the site works: the app knew the answer before it asked, so a contest between two people in the back has nothing left to argue about. Whoever is refereeing changes every round. The driver plays every round, which is the right way round, because they can do the least.

Why you are on the same side

The app only runs a game it already knows the answer to. It solves the letter rack before showing it to you, and searches every combination of the six numbers before naming the target. So when it says the best word was eight letters, it has that word. There is nothing to argue about, which is why you can play alongside each other, or against each other with the phone between you. Either way the number comes from the app.

It gets harder on purpose

Adults work out a fixed difficulty in about twenty minutes and then coast, so the bar moves. Beat it and the next round of that game asks for more. Miss and it gives some back. Levels are saved, so an hour in you are playing something much harder than you started with.

No signal, no problem

Open the site once on wifi before you leave. The phone keeps everything after that, word list included, and works out every round on the device. Scores upload when coverage returns. No round ever waits on a network.

Night mode

The Night button drops the screen far below ordinary dark mode. A lit phone in a dark cab pulls a driver's eye even when nobody is talking to them. Use it once the sun goes down.
